About the Sheep Gestation Calculator
A free, private planning tool for shepherds, built because lambing dates deserve better than a scribbled note on a feed bag.
Our Story
The Sheep Gestation Calculator started on a working farm, not in an office. One spring a ewe lambed a week before anyone expected her to, in the cold, with no pen ready and the clostridial booster still in the fridge. The lambs pulled through, but the near miss made the point: a due date you keep in your head is a due date you will eventually get wrong.
The first version was a spreadsheet that added 147 days to a breeding date. It helped, but it still could not answer the questions that actually mattered in the shed, when to scan, when to vaccinate, when to start feeding harder. So we rebuilt it as the tool you are using now: the date, the honest window around it, and a plan of dated jobs between breeding and lambing.
Who We Are
We are a small, independent team of shepherds and web builders, not a marketing arm for a feed or pharmaceutical brand. Nobody pays us to recommend a product, because we do not recommend products. Everything here is written by people who have knelt in wet straw at 2am and needed the numbers to be right the first time.
The Sheep Gestation Calculator is owned and operated by its founding team as an independent digital publisher. It is a standalone brand with no parent company, no outside investor and no livestock supplier behind it, so the calculator answers to its readers and nobody else. Our registered contact for the business is hello@sheepgestationcalculator.com.
What We Do
We build free, private tools that help shepherds plan a lambing season with confidence. The core calculator turns a breeding date into an expected lambing date, brackets it with the earliest and latest realistic outcomes, and lays out every milestone on a dated timeline. We also publish plain-language guides on gestation length, pregnancy signs, breed differences and the jobs each stage of the season needs.
- Estimate a lambing date from any breeding date and breed, or a manual override.
- See the realistic 142 to 152 day window, not just a single guess.
- Follow a dated plan: scanning, vaccination, crutching, nutrition and pen prep.
- Copy or print a clean summary to pin up in the shed.
Why we built it
Missing a lambing date is expensive. Ewes need their clostridial booster around 30 days out, crutching before they lamb, a step up in nutrition from day 100, and pens ready two weeks ahead. Get the date wrong and every one of those jobs slips.
Most "gestation calculators" just add a number of days and stop. We wanted the thing we actually needed on the farm: the date, the realistic window around it, and a dated plan of what to do between now and then.
How our estimates work
Sheep gestation averages 147 days, with normal lambing anywhere in a 142 to 152 day window. We take your breeding date, add the gestation length for the breed you select (or a manual override between 138 and 155 days), and bracket the result with the earliest and latest realistic outcomes.
Every milestone on the timeline is anchored to a real date, either counted forward from breeding (return-to-heat, scanning, nutrition) or backward from the expected lambing day (vaccination, crutching, pen prep).
Your data stays yours
The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored in local storage, and there is no account to create. Close the tab and it is gone. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working offline, useful in a shed with no signal.
Accuracy and honesty
Breed averages are typical published figures, and individual animals vary. The tool gives you a well-founded estimate, not a guarantee.
This calculator provides estimates for planning purposes only. Gestation length varies between animals. Always consult a qualified veterinarian for animal health, breeding and lambing decisions.
