Sheep Breeding Season: When Do Ewes Cycle and When Should Rams Go In?

Most sheep breed in autumn. Ewes are short-day breeders: as daylight shortens after midsummer they start cycling, and they keep cycling until late winter. In the Northern Hemisphere that means roughly August to January, with peak fertility in October and November. In the Southern Hemisphere it is roughly February to June or July, with peak joining in March to May.

To choose the exact week for the ram, count back about 147 days from the date you want lambing to start. Then check that your breed is actually cycling at that time of year.

Why sheep breed in autumn: daylight and melatonin

Sheep are seasonally polyestrous. During the breeding season a ewe that does not conceive comes back into heat roughly every 17 days, cycle after cycle. Outside the season she stops cycling altogether.

The switch is day length:

  • After the summer solstice the nights get longer.
  • The pineal gland releases melatonin during darkness, so longer nights mean a longer daily melatonin signal.
  • According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, that signal stimulates the hypothalamus to release GnRH, which restarts the hormone cascade behind ovulation.
  • As days lengthen again in late winter and spring, the signal shortens and the ewe drops back into seasonal anestrus.

The advantage for the sheep is timing. A ewe mated in autumn lambs about five months later, in spring, when grass growth is coming. Your management calendar is working with that biology, not against it.

Two points matter for practical planning:

  1. The trigger is decreasing day length, not a fixed number of daylight hours. Figures like “ewes cycle below 14 hours of daylight” come from specific locations and do not transfer neatly to other latitudes.
  2. Rams are seasonal too, but less so. Rams produce sperm all year, but Ontario sheep-industry guidance notes that libido and testicle size peak in autumn. A ram used in spring is usually less vigorous than the same ram in October.

Breeding season months: Northern vs Southern Hemisphere

The pattern is the same in both hemispheres. The calendar is shifted by roughly six months.

Regional sources line up with this picture:

  • UK: NADIS notes that most breeds only show oestrus from September, with peak fecundity in October and November, and that January lambing needs ewes mated in August.
  • Missouri (US): University of Missouri Extension puts peak fertility from late September to November, with cycling stopping around January or February and returning in August or September.
  • Queensland (Australia): The state government describes a season that usually runs from about February to June, with autumn joining in March to May.
  • New South Wales: By the end of January, most ewes are cycling every 17 days according to NSW government joining guidance.
  • New Zealand: Tupping is commonly in March or April.

Treat the table as a starting point. Breed and latitude move these dates by weeks.

Latitude and climate

Latitude changes how strongly day length swings through the year. The Canadian Sheep Federation notes that breeds originating further from the equator tend to have shorter, more sharply defined seasons. Breeds from lower latitudes, where day length changes little, are much less seasonal. In the tropics, many hair-sheep flocks cycle year-round.

Heat also matters at the start of the season. University of Kentucky guidance points out that embryo loss is highest in hot weather and mostly occurs in the first few days after conception. A flock joined in late summer heat may cycle but still scan lower than the same flock joined a month later.

Seasonal anestrus and the transition period

Seasonal anestrus is the non-breeding part of the year. The ovaries are largely inactive, the ewe shows no heat, and a ram running with her usually achieves nothing.

Between anestrus and the full season sits a transition period. This is where many early-joining plans come unstuck:

  • The first ovulation of the season is often silent. Merck notes that the ewe ovulates but shows no heat, because her brain needs a period of progesterone exposure from a previous cycle before it responds with heat behaviour.
  • Heats are shorter and less intense at the start and end of the season. Merck describes estrus as longer and more intense in autumn than at the edges of the season.
  • Conception is less reliable. Ontario guidance notes that ewes are less likely to conceive or hold a pregnancy at the extreme boundaries of the season, and that ewes are generally most fertile around their third or fourth cycle.

The practical takeaway: a ram that goes in at the very first sign of the season will get ewes marked, but conception rates, litter size and lambing spread are usually better when joining is timed closer to the peak. If you need to join earlier than your breed naturally allows, the ram effect is one management tool that can bring ewes into heat during the transition period.

How breed changes the breeding season

Breed is the biggest reason two flocks in the same district have different breeding windows. University of Kentucky extension groups breeds by how long their breeding season lasts:

Some caveats before you plan around a table like this:

  • Classifications vary between sources. Katahdins, for example, are listed as long-season by Kentucky extension and as short-season by the Canadian Sheep Federation. Hair-sheep flocks differ, so your own records beat any list.
  • Measured seasons depend on location. A Scottish study by Wheeler and Land (1977) recorded Finnsheep cycling from about October to May, Tasmanian Merinos from about September to February, and Scottish Blackface only from about October to February under Scottish conditions.
  • Merinos are not strongly seasonal. Queensland government guidance says Merino ewes can often be joined at times of year when British breeds would be in anestrus, especially with the ram effect.
  • Crossbreds usually sit between their parent breeds. A Dorset or Finn cross will generally cycle earlier and later than a pure Suffolk.

If you want out-of-season lambs, breed choice does more than almost any other decision. Dorset, Polypay, Merino-type and many hair breeds give you far more flexibility than strongly seasonal meat breeds.

Ewe lambs and rams: different seasons

Not every animal in the flock runs on the same calendar.

Ewe lambs start cycling later and stop earlier than mature ewes. The Canadian Sheep Federation notes they begin roughly three weeks after adult ewes and finish about three weeks sooner. Their heats are also shorter and weaker. If you join ewe lambs with the main flock on the first day of the season, many will not yet be cycling. Rams stay fertile across the year but perform best in autumn. For early joinings, give rams extra attention: shade, shearing well ahead of joining, good condition, and a pre-breeding soundness check roughly two months before they are needed, because heat stress and illness affect semen quality weeks later.

When should the ram go in? Work back from lambing

Start with the lambing date you want, not the date the ram happens to be available. The questions that should decide it:

  • When will you have grass or feed for ewes in early lactation?
  • When is your labour available? Lambing clashes with calving, harvest or off-farm work cause losses.
  • What housing and weather will you have? Outdoor lambing in the coldest, wettest weeks raises lamb losses.
  • What market are you targeting? Early-lamb markets, stores or finishing on grass all pull the date in different directions.
  • Is your breed cycling at that time? If not, you need a different breed or an out-of-season plan.

Then do the arithmetic. Sheep gestation averages about 147 days, with most ewes lambing between 142 and 152 days after service. The detail of that range is covered in how long sheep are pregnant.

Northern Hemisphere example

You want lambing to start on 1 April.

  • 1 April minus 147 days = 5 November. That is your ram-in date.
  • Ewes served on 5 November have an expected lambing date of 1 April, with a normal window of 27 March to 6 April.
  • Most ewes will not conceive on the first day. Those that conceive on their second cycle will lamb around 17 days later, so plan labour and pens through late April.

Early November is well inside the peak season for most Northern Hemisphere breeds, so no out-of-season techniques are needed.

Southern Hemisphere example

You want lambing to start on 1 September.

  • 1 September minus 147 days = 7 April. That is your ram-in date.
  • Ewes served on 7 April have an expected lambing date of 1 September, with a normal window of 27 August to 6 September.
  • April falls in the main autumn joining period for most Australian and New Zealand flocks.

How long the rams stay in

The ram-in date sets the start of lambing. The joining length sets how long lambing lasts. Canadian Sheep Federation guidance suggests that about 70 to 75% of ewes conceive in the first cycle of a joining in the main season, and close to all of them by the third. Many flocks run rams for about two cycles, around 35 days, which NSW government guidance also recommends.

Getting ready before the season starts

A breeding season that starts on time depends on work done six to ten weeks earlier:

  • Body condition: score ewes well before joining so thin ewes have time to gain. See the body condition scoring guide.
  • Flushing: a short rise in nutrition before joining can lift ovulation rate in ewes that are below target condition. See flushing ewes before breeding.
  • Rams: check feet, condition and testicles, and arrange a veterinary breeding soundness exam where appropriate.
  • Ram numbers: decide group sizes based on ram age, paddock size and joining length.
  • Records: fit marking harnesses so every service date can go straight into the calculator.
  • Health plan: agree vaccinations, parasite control and any trace-element testing with your vet. Avoid unnecessary handling and transport in the first weeks after joining.

Breeding outside the natural season

Some flocks deliberately lamb outside spring. Common reasons are early-lamb markets, accelerated systems such as three lambings in two years, or spreading workload. The main approaches are:

  • Breed choice: using ewes with long breeding seasons, such as Dorset, Polypay, Merino-type and many hair breeds.
  • The ram effect: introducing rams, or teaser rams, to ewes that have been kept away from males, which can bring forward cycling during the transition period. See the ram effect guide.
  • Light control: housing ewes under artificial long days followed by short days. Ontario guidance describes long days for 8 to 12 weeks followed by short days, with breeding at least 8 weeks after short days begin.
  • Hormonal programmes: melatonin implants, progestagen sponges or devices and related products. NADIS notes melatonin can advance the season by up to about two months. Product availability and licensing differ between countries, so any hormonal programme should be planned with your veterinarian.

Out-of-season joinings usually give lower conception and smaller litters than the same ewes joined at the peak. Budget for that before changing your system.

Common mistakes with breeding season timing

  • Using US or UK months as universal. September to November is a Northern Hemisphere answer. Southern Hemisphere flocks breed in autumn, which is March to May.
  • Joining at the very start of the transition period and expecting peak-season results.
  • Assuming every breed follows the same calendar. A Suffolk and a Dorset in the same field can have breeding seasons months apart.
  • Putting ewe lambs in with the main flock on day one when many are not yet cycling.
  • Ignoring heat. Late-summer joinings in hot weather can cost pregnancies even when ewes are marked.
  • Choosing a ram-in date without counting forward to see where lambing lands.

Frequently asked questions

Can sheep breed all year round?

Some can. Breeds with long breeding seasons, such as Dorset, Merino types, Polypay, Dorper and many tropical hair sheep, may cycle for most of the year, especially at lower latitudes. Strongly seasonal breeds such as Suffolk, Texel and Scottish Blackface usually stop cycling from late winter to early summer. Year-round breeding generally needs a suitable breed or an out-of-season management programme.

What month should rams go in for spring lambs?

Count back about 147 days from the start of lambing. In the Northern Hemisphere, early April lambing means rams in during early November, and early March lambing means rams in during early October. In the Southern Hemisphere, early September lambing means rams in during early April.

Which sheep breeds breed out of season?

Breeds usually described as having long breeding seasons include Dorset, Polypay, Merino, Rambouillet, Dorper, Romanov, St Croix and Finnsheep, although classifications differ between sources. Individual flocks within a breed can also vary, so check your own records.

Is the sheep breeding season different in Australia and New Zealand?

The biology is the same, but the months are reversed. Most Australian and New Zealand flocks join in autumn, roughly February to May, for lambing in late winter or spring. Merino flocks are often joined at other times of year too, because Merinos are less strongly seasonal than British breeds.

Do ewe lambs have the same breeding season as mature ewes?

No. Ewe lambs typically start cycling a few weeks after mature ewes and stop a few weeks earlier, with shorter and weaker heats. Many producers join ewe lambs after the main flock has started, as a separate group.
